Tricky Goose Training designs engaging online training courses for researchers and students. We help institutions promote compliance, but our courses are not about compliance. We have a view of research training that’s deeper, more scholarly, and frankly, more fun.
Tricky Goose was founded by Dr Mark Hooper and is based in Brisbane, Australia.

FAQs
What’s with the name, Tricky Goose?
It’s just a bit of fun. We started this venture because we saw that most research training courses bury important topics in the language of corporations and compliance. Research is a playful and curious thing, and we wanted a playful and curious name. We take research training very seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously.
Can you make a course for my specific country or region?
Yes. Our courses cover global issues, even if different regions may be governed by different regulations, codes, and norms. Our courses are designed with a global mindset, and we design them specifically so that they can be adapted to suit your region and policy environment.
How do customisations work?
We help you make our courses your own. When you license one of our courses, we provide a basic questionnaire to get you thinking about the changes you’d like to make. We then make those changes for you. Almost anything can change. Add your own text, links, resources, policies, images, and even videos. It’s easy! It usually takes about three weeks.
Why do you have a licence model?
Designing effective and engaging multimedia training courses is time consuming. By licensing our content to a number of different institutions, we can charge less than we otherwise would for a very high quality learning experience. This ‘subscription’ model also incentivises us to continuously update our courses and offer the best possible service. We crave good reviews and return business. We form lasting partnerships.
Are you developing new courses?
Absolutely. One thing we’re excited about is a new course under development called “Handmade supervision”. It’s for new supervisors of PhD and Masters students. We’re also designing a course about the Australian export controls regulatory environment.
Do you have anything we can use for free?
Yes. We love to share, and offer some resources under Creative Commons licences. Have a look at our Downloads page.
